The Malta Institute of Financial Services (ifs Malta) in collaboration with Ganado Advocates recently organised a specialised event entitled ‘Governance, Risk and Compliance Practices in the Financial Services Sector: Designing an effective control environment’.

The well attended event was very successful as it managed to bring together practitioners from across the financial services sector to interact with experts from the industry and the regulator and address key issues and gain insights into topical areas which are constantly evolving.

In her welcome address, Ifs Head of School, Grace Debono, advised that the theme of the seminar was specifically chosen due its relevance and increasing importance within the sector. Governance, Risk and Compliance have already had a great impact and changed the financial services landscape we once knew. With even more requirements on the horizon, it is essential that we keep up-to-date and be prepared for the developments taking place.

The seminar commenced with an informative address from James Farrugia, Partner, Ganado Advocates on key considerations in Governance, Risk and Compliance and continued with a number of interactive workshops which provided insights into good corporate governance, managing conduct risk, corporate ethics and regulatory compliance. The innovative format of these workshops proved to be very popular with participants.

For the final panel discussion, moderated by James Farrugia, ifs assembled an array of high-level speakers which included Ian Coppini, Risk Advisory Leaders, Deloitte; Steve Ellul, Financial Consultant; Martin Scicluna, Chairman APS Bank; and Anthony Eddington, Head of Financial Crime Compliance, MFSA, to provide diverse viewpoints and highlight some interesting facts and developments taking place. The event ended with a Q&A session, where participants had the opportunity to interact directly and gain first-hand knowledge from the speakers. This definitely contributed to having a more holistic view and better understanding of the main issues at hand.

President of ifs Malta, Kenneth B. Micallef, stated “the positive response to this event is very encouraging and shows that industry professionals are receptive to the views of experts and are keen to better understand the issues and requirements related to Governance, Risk and Compliance. Ifs Malta is committed to fostering professional development within financial services and looks forward to organising more successful specialised events and workshops in the near future”.
